"Outstanding boarding facilities"  (Ofsted 2011)

Welcome to Barton Hill, the boarding facility of Shaftesbury School. We are a coeducational, state boarding school, providing high quality boarding at the lowest possible cost; you only pay the cost of boarding as the education at a state school is free. This is all at a fraction of the cost of boarding at an independent school.

Shaftesbury School offers boarding facilities for over 100 students. We welcome students from all over the world, including Hong Kong, Spain, Germany and France. We also welcome many students from the Channel Islands. Due to our convenient location in rural Dorset, only two hours south west of London, we are perfect for weekly boarding and for those looking for a break from our nation’s capital.

Boarders live at Barton Hill House – situated a short distance from the school - which provides a secure and welcoming place to live, work and play. A recent award of £3 million has resulted in a complete refurbishment of the existing House, with the addition of a purpose-built block including 24 en suite, single study rooms for sixth formers.

Pastoral Care

The care, welfare and happiness of our students is our main focus. The House is well staffed by a full-time team including the Director and Deputy Director of Boarding, and a team of Senior House Parents. The students are also cared for by teachers and staff that work at school and strong links are maintained with school through the Heads of House. All of our staff is always on hand to offer guidance, support and encouragement. Each student has a special mentor, with whom they have regular meetings to discuss any pastoral or academic issues.

Why Board?

Life as a boarder improves students’ self confidence, and they learn to cope for themselves in a supportive environment. There is very much a ‘family atmosphere’ in the House, and many students establish life-long friendships. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves whilst being guided and nurtured, and we see them grow in many ways. The opportunity to live and work amongst students from other countries develops a sense of community and an appreciation of those from other cultures. Perhaps most importantly, boarding allows students to experience the learning that continues out of the classroom, and the opportunity to study together with their peers is truly enriching experience.  We also allocate new students a ‘buddy’ on arrival to ease the transition into boarding life.

Fees

Fees are currently £2625 per term. Single study room accommodation is available for sixth form students for an additional £500 per year. For weekly boarding rates please contact the house.
