High Quality Physical Education

All members of the PE department are committed to the delivery of High Quality PE, both within lessons and through extra-curricular activities. This involves:

  • Students are always motivated to bring their PE kit and participate in lessons
  • Students know what they are being taught and understand lesson objectives
  • Students are aware of the healthy benefits of exercise in their lives
  • Students have the confidence to perform and lead other students
  • Students are able to develop skills in a range of sports
  • Students willingly participate in challenging, competitive and creative sports
  • Students will make decisions for themselves based on their understanding of sport
  • Students show a desire to improve and achieve in relation to their own abilities
  • Students have the stamina, suppleness and strength to keep going
  • Students value and enjoy PE, school and community sport and participate with enthusiasm

Aims of the PE Department

Enjoy

We aim to ensure students enjoy their physical education lessons by providing exciting and challenging lessons that enable them to progress as performers and learners

Achieve

We teach to enable students to achieve to the best of their sporting potential and always try to inspire students to try a variety of different sporting activities

Aspire

We promote student aspirations through PE and Sport and work with the GISA (Global Institute of Student Aspirations) to ensure students have a vision and a pathway through our subject. We aim to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible. To this end, links have been established with local outside agencies who support the work we do within the curriculum. We aim to develop our club links in the future to allow more students access to sport outside of school. Established links include; clubs, schools, development officers and coaches.

We are committed to providing HQ PE within curriculum time and currently offer all students at Key Stage 3 the Government target of 2 hours HQ PE every week. At Key Stage 4 & 5 (exam subjects) students enjoy 2.5 hours HQ PE per week. In addition to this an extensive extra curricular program is offered to encourage students’ diverse and challenging activities in a safe and controlled environment.

We firmly believe in promoting healthy lifestyles through PE lessons and clubs. We feel it is important that our students understand the benefits of exercise and physical activity in their lives, leading to a lifelong interest in sport.

Shaftesbury School is part of the Healthy Schools initiative. The PE department has recently launched Active Lunchtimes allowing students access to 40 extra minutes of sport every lunchtime and some break times.
