In 1999, the school was awarded Sports College status. This specialism enhances students’ opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports as well as raising the standards of teaching and learning of PE. We offer eight accredited courses at GCSE and A level, which can increase students’ weekly PE time to in excess of 5 hours.
The School has an abundance of outdoor space for PE and games, complemented by modern facilities including floodlit all-weather playing pitches, a fitness suite, climbing wall, gymnasium and dance studio. Students are also encouraged to join our many sports clubs and teams.
We believe that involvement in sports and activites is valuable in developing important qualities of teamwork, self-confidence and leadership. However, the role of the specialism extends well beyond work in PE and sport alone. The sports specialism shapes the ethos of the school and supports the work across all departments, and Ofsted confirmed in their report that this is a strength of our school. Ofsted recognise the sporting influence in the way we now have vertical tutor groups and houses, which encourages friendly competition, combined with our ongoing mission to raise student aspirations.
