Further Mathematics is studied as part of the Maths Futures Programme.
Further Mathematics is wonderfully broad. Whether you’re interested in the beauty of infinite patterns or how your sat nav finds the shortest route home, further mathematics has something for you. Further mathematics deal with abstract concepts, powerful functions, and some of the most versatile mathematical tools the modern world has.
Entry requirements and skills needed: Grade 8 in Maths. You’ll need to be resilient as this may be the first time you’ve encountered really challenging maths. It also helps if you like thinking about abstract ideas, did we mention a lot of our numbers are imaginary?
Assessment: Further mathematics is examined in four papers, two covering the pure content, two covering applied mathematics.
Progression: A mathematics degree is the obvious, but by no means the only, pathway after studying further mathematics. Employers and higher education institutes recognise your unparalleled ability to problem solve and engage in quantitative reasoning if you’ve studied further mathematics. Perhaps this is why those who have studied further mathematics go on to have the highest annual salary six years after finishing A-levels (2011 data, first published in 2019).
